The bench · Ocean Grove
Seven minutes over the bridge.
That is the whole pitch. If you surf Thirteenth Beach, paddle the river, or swim off the Bluff, your wetsuit repairer is a short drive away at 9 to 11 Sinclair Street, Ocean Grove. Open Thursday and Friday 11am to 5pm, Saturday 9am to 1pm. Drop off available when closed.
Barwon Heads suits turn up here constantly, and they have a character of their own. They sit at the ocean end of a pattern we see right across the peninsula, because ocean side and bay side damage across the Bellarine are not the same thing at all.
What Barwon Heads suits arrive with
Thirteenth Beach damage. Exposed, powerful, and it holds people down. We see more full knee blowouts and long tension splits from Thirteenth than from anywhere else on the Bellarine. When a wave puts a suit under real load, it tears from wherever it was already weakest, usually an underarm seam or a knee that was already thin.
Fin cuts from the Bluff and the point. Crowded on anything decent, with a lot of boards in a small area. Clean slices to the outer thigh, the calf and occasionally the forearm when someone else's board comes through.
River mouth grit. The Barwon carries silt and fine sand, and it gets into everything. Zip tracks are the casualty. Grit sits in the teeth, the slider drags it along, and the throat of the slider opens up until the zip stops closing. People assume the zip is dead. Usually it is just the slider, which is the cheapest job we do.
Seals gone soft over winter. Barwon Heads surfs through, and a 4/3 doing five hard months loses its neck seal first. A loose neck flushes cold water down your chest on every duck dive, which feels exactly like the suit has stopped being warm when the neoprene is fine.
Golf club and river crowd swim gear. Open water swimmers off the Bluff and out of the river bring in thin skin suits, which tear through the liner from fingernails on the way on. Different material, different patching method.
What we repair
All of it. Tears and fin cuts at any length, seams, full suit re-tapes, zip sliders and complete zip replacements, neck and cuff seals, knee pads, panel replacement, booties, hoods, gloves, and alterations when the suit no longer fits.
Every brand, surf, dive, triathlon and junior suits included.
Prices for each job are on the repairs page. Inspection and quoting are free, you get a fixed written quote with photos, and nothing happens until you say yes.
The one to deal with before winter
Zips.
They fail in July because that is when the suit gets used every day, and July is exactly when you cannot afford to be out of the water waiting on a repair. A slider replaced in autumn is a quick job on the bench. The same zip in the middle of winter, after you have forced it a dozen times and bent the teeth, is a full track replacement.
If your zip catches, grinds or splits open behind the slider, bring it in now. Our guide to zip repairs explains the four different failures and which one you probably have.
Same goes for seals. March and April are the right time, not June.
Getting it to us
Over the bridge, along Shell Road, into Ocean Grove. Parking on Sinclair Street.
Wash the suit in fresh water first, inside and out, and dry it completely both sides. Glue does not bond to salt and we cannot inspect a wet suit, so a damp drop off just delays things.
Bring the whole suit even if one thing is wrong with it. The problems people have not noticed are the ones that finish a suit off.
If you cannot make opening hours, drop off is available when we are closed. If driving over is awkward, post it. Our postal repairs page has the process.
Repair or replace
A mid range 4/3 runs around $520 and a premium suit past $700. Nearly every repair is a small fraction of that.
The thing that decides it is not the damage, it is the rubber around the damage. Pinch the neoprene a few centimetres away and let go. Springy and it snaps back, you are fine. Papery, stays stretched, crumbles slightly, and the suit is near the end whatever we do to the tear.
We will tell you which you have, and if it is the second one we will say so rather than invoice you. Our repair or replace guide runs through the maths.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the nearest wetsuit repairer to Barwon Heads?
The Wetsuit Repair Shack at 9 to 11 Sinclair Street, Ocean Grove, about 7 minutes from Barwon Heads over the bridge. Open Thursday and Friday 11am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 1pm, with drop off available when closed. No appointment needed.
My wetsuit zip has stopped closing. Does it need a whole new zip?
Usually not. A worn slider is the most common zip failure and is by far the cheapest fix. If the zip closes but splits open behind the slider, that is a slider problem rather than a damaged track. Bring it in before you force it, because forcing a stuck slider bends teeth and turns a small job into a full replacement.
What causes most Barwon Heads wetsuit damage?
Fin cuts from crowded surf at the Bluff and the point, knee blowouts and tension splits from heavy waves at Thirteenth Beach, and zips worn out by silt and sand from the river mouth.
When should I get my wetsuit serviced?
Autumn, before the water drops. Zips and seals fail mid winter because that is when the suit is used daily, and that is the worst time to be without it.
Do you repair open water swimming and triathlon wetsuits?
Yes. Thin skin triathlon neoprene is a different material from surf rubber, needs its own patching method, and is priced separately. Fingernail tears through the liner are the most common tri repair we see.
